Channeling Kombucha Girl

I am a late bloomer when it comes to romance novels. I’ve always loved reading, but I used to have a habit of burning through one genre or one author at a time. So it wasn’t until I was well into my 30s that I started reading romance. Erotica was great, but HEAs didn’t do much for me. (I’m not a particularly romantic person.) That said, it didn’t take long for my monster and horror loving self to find the paranormal romance genre.

Wizards, witches, gods, goddesses, vampires, weres, aliens, and other PNR-common monsters have been in my reading rotation ever since. But it wasn’t until Elizabeth introduced me to the monster-fucking PNR sub-genre that I realized how much I had been missing out.

Like someone who understands the importance of easing into things, she first recommended Kathryn Ann Kingsley’s Harrow Faire series. Magic, monsters, steamy sex, and morally grey protagonists? Yes, please! Finally a safe space to explore my interest in bad boys without the therapy bills. Kingsley is the Queen of the morally grey—or lets be honest, just plain evil—villain turned love interest. I love how she creates monsters that are unique and sexy but frightening and familiar enough to make you close your closet doors before you turn off the lights.

If shibori isn’t already one of your kinks, it will be after this series.

With my appetite whetted and ready for more, in true anaïsisreading form, she decided to (as we euchre players say) go big or go home.

Admittedly I was unprepared for Run & Hide by Beatrix Hollow. Cryptids were one thing, but until then my sexy monster reads weren’t particularly specific about monster anatomy. And it’s a reverse harem. It’s almost too much monster dick for one gal… but not really though.

Misunderstood monsters with fancy dicks

After cackling at my uncharacteristic pearl clutching, she stopped by my house and dropped Morning Glory Milking Farm on my desk while wearing the most wicked grin I’ve ever seen on her.

(Cue giggling from mischievous friends.)

Listen, folks, I am pretty adventurous but Minotaurs were never even on my PNR radar.

Well they sure as hell are now.

Me, thinking about fancy monster dick

I don’t know how, but Nacosta managed to turn table milking and Minotaurs into one of the sweetest, high-heat, slow-burn stories I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying. Is it for everyone? No, but you wouldn’t be here if you weren’t at least curious.

All this is to say that a good story and the right characters can make me second guess tropes and plots that I never thought I’d be into. And I love how subversive the PNR genre is in that way.
